Wednesday, April 8 — Santa Fe

Today was our day to explore Santa Fe.

Hovering over the center of the city is the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi.

Monica Kaden's sculpture of St. Francis Dancing on Water evokes quite a different feeling:

The Museum of Contemporary Native Arts is a short block away from the cathedral.

The exhibit of pottery by Navajo artist, Christine Nofchissey McHorse was particularly striking:

Walking alongside the cathedral, I came across this sad sign:

Around the corner is the Loretto Chapel.

The winding staircase inside is said to be "miraculous" because the identity of the carpenter is unknown and it was built without nails and there is no obvious central support.

(Snopes, of course, explains it all.)

St. Felipe Park was the site of our picnic lunch today.

We enjoyed tamales from El Parasol — chicken tamales with green chile, and pork tamales with red chili. Yum!

After lunch, we drove to the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture. We were entranced by the outdoor sculptures:

"People of the Red-Tailed Hawk," by Doug Hyde, Nez Perce/Assiniboine/Chippewa

"Mountain Spirit Dancer," by Craig Dan Goseyun, San Carlos Apache

"Ready to Dance," by Allen Hauser (Haozous,) Chiricahua Apache

I liked her so much I had to take another picture of her face:

We went back to the historic part of town for 20 hurried minutes before the museums closed. I went alone to see the Georgia O'Keeffe. Marie Therese and Anne Marie went to the New Mexico Museum of Art.

And then....  We found a bar with a balcony overlooking the plaza. Marie Therese and I enjoyed an IPA from the Chama River Brewing Company.

Anne Marie walked around the plaza until she found what she was looking for—

 — an ice cream bar!

For supper, we had samosas and dal at Annapurna's World Vegetarian Cafe, an Indian restaurant. All through the meal, we talked about the experiences Marie Therese and Anne Marie had on their trip to India many years ago.

Marie: A la finale Anne Marie n a pas termine son plat, ce qui lui rappelait trop notre expedition en Indes.
