I have the blood of a parsnip. Marie Therese and Anne Marie told me this is what they say in France when your fingers are cold.
It's early Monday morning as I'm typing this in an AirBnB in Durango, Colorado. At the breakfast table just now, my fingers were cold and I said so.
How can we possibly tell you about crossing the Rockies yesterday? The photos certainly don't do it, and whatever words I type here can't even begin.
It was spectacular.
Five minutes after we left our hotel, all three of us simultaneously shouted "Ooooooh!" when we came to the top of a hill and saw the white-capped mountains:
from Hwy 70 at Lookout Mountain in Golden, CO |
The wildlife was hiding but we saw many people fishing!
Off in the distance, we continued to see snow-capped peaks. We stopped to take photos.
Our picnic lunch was at a delightful rest area along the Eagle River near the town of Eagle.
We continued to be entranced by the views of snowy mountains in the distance.
We stopped to take photos in the town of Ouray, because Marie Therese noticed the words "Stanislawski Block" on one of the prominent buildings. We thought that was funny.
And then we continued along Highway 550 and that's when the drama began.
After the above photo, it was impossible for the driver to take any more pictures.
The road was narrow and winding, with steep drop-offs. It was impossible to stop. The speed limit was 25 miles per hour, and sometimes went down to 15.
The beauty was incredible. You will just have to see for yourselves some day.
The colors were spectacular — red rock, green trees, white snow. Ahh!
We arrived at our lodging — a guest house on a dirt road beyond Durango — just at nightfall. After bringing in our suitcases, we went into town for dinner at El Moro. You would think it would be a Mexican restaurant, but no.
We all` thought the restroom sink was pretty cool.
The food was good, too! So was the wine!
Wow, I've driven that road from Ouray to Durango many times! Skied up to the passes above the road--many, many years ago. Half the avalanches in the US occur on that road in the winter. Amazing beauty. I'll be there in a month.
