On our drive to Silver City, New Mexico, we stopped to admire some unusual rock formations at the side of the road:
We turned off the highway — Interstate 10 — at the town of Wilcox.
Wilcox is a small town with lots of history, including a saloon that ran into trouble during the time of Prohibition.
Forty miles from Wilcox, down a two-lane highway, is the Chiricahua National Monument. We wanted to see this place. As we entered, we saw this sign:
Why EXTREME danger of fire! The winds today were ferocious!
The rock formations here are extraordinary! It's a beautiful place, filled with trees.
We found a picnic table, but it was MUCH too windy to eat outside today. For the first time, we ate lunch in the car. We enjoyed leftover pizza from Tucson. It was delicious!
After lunch, Marie Therese and Anne Marie walked along the Echo Canyon trail while I took a nap in the car.
True confession: The next two photos are from my visit to Chiricahua in 2010.
After we returned to Wilcox, we stopped at the Coronado Vineyards to buy wine and pistachios.
Finally, we arrived in Silver City to spend the evening with the family of Matthew Schultz and Nora Love, and their beautiful daughter, Hazel Simone.
We had dinner at Jalisco's, a fine Mexican restaurant.
Here's the home of Matthew, Nora and Hazel. We liked this house very much because it seemed warm and happy and full of life.
