Friday, April 10 — Santa Fe to the Grand Canyon

We spent the whole day in the car today, driving from Santa Fe to the Grand Canyon.

Most of the time, there was not much to look at.

The sky became cloudy and grey.

Somewhere in New Mexico, we stopped at an Indian Market to buy gas.

Once again, we found ourselves on the Continental Divide.

Marie Therese and Anne Marie each found something interesting to buy in the store.

We stopped for our picnic lunch at an Indian Visitors’ Center in Arizona.

Our highway ran parallel to a railroad that connects California with Chicago. We saw many, many freight trains as we drove along.

The visitors’ center in Flagstaff, Arizona, is also the AMTRAK train station.

The passenger train from California stops here once every morning, and the passenger train going west from Chicago stops here once every night. All the other trains are freight trains, and one comes by about every twenty minutes.

We met a very friendly man at the train station. He has been to France many times and enjoyed speaking French with Marie Therese and Anne Marie.

Marie: Il nous a immediatement parle de Brive la Gaillarde ,c est un passionne des trains et Brive est le croisement des lignes Paris Toulouse et Bordeaux Lyon. ll retourne a Brive le 24  mai!

His name is Don Baker, but he enjoys saying that in French his name is Don Boulanger. Long ago, he was a student at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He studied clouds and is a meteorologist!

About 5:30 in the evening, we finally entered the Grand Canyon National Park. Many deer were crossing the road. They were not at all afraid of the cars, and stopped to eat the grass just feet away from us.

Tomorrow morning we will go to the rim of the Grand Canyon and spend the day admiring the views.  I am truly hoping we have blue skies tomorrow!
